Nature Photography: Kookaburra

Went for a walk this morning and was pleased to find this fine feathered friend posing on a floodway sign. He stayed there for the longest time while I snapped away. It's just as well as the first 20 or so shots are quite blurry because of the early morning light and also because of this photographer's ineptitude with her camera. The photos got clearer as I inched closer and closer until the bird figured I had got close enough and flew off.

Kookaburra sitting on a signpost

This reminded me of the children's ditty we learned in elementary school (in Canada). Thanks to these silly lyrics, for the longest time, I thought gum trees held gumdrops and monkeys.

The Kookaburra Song
By Marion Sinclair

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Eating all the gum drops he can see.
Stop Kookaburra, stop Kookaburra
Save some there for me!

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree,
Counting all the monkeys he can see.
Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
That's not a monkey, that's me!

My kids like this alternative verse:

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire,
Jumping up and down, with his pants on fire.
Ouch, Kookaburra, ouch! Kookaburra,
Hot your tail must be!
